The School of Life Sciences was founded in December 2012 with Department of Microbiology and                 Immunology, Department of Molecular and Structural Biology, and Joint Laboratory of Molecular Biology of      Viruses between Tianjin University and Johns Hopkins University. Guiding the school are policies of pilot             scientific research, top-notch talents and a globalized academic goal with an ambition to lead domestic peers and  become internationally acknowledged.

School of Life Sciences has attracted a bunch of outstanding faculty members experienced in teaching and     research from home and abroad. In more than 40 faculties and staff members, there are 11 professors, 4 associate professors and 10 lecturers. The school never hesitates introducing top talents. A competitive team of scientific     research with balanced academic structure has been formed, including  1 Chang Jiang Scholar and 1 í«973 Programí» chief scientist.

School of Life Sciences has set up a stratified system of academic cultivation, including a center for post-    doctoral studies, and is qualified for granting doctoral, master and bachelor degrees. Program of biology has the   national first-grade authorization to grant doctoral degrees, while subordinate programs of microbiology,                immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology and structural biology are qualified for post-graduate admission.    Program of biological science admits undergraduate students. At present, there are 278 current students including 168 undergraduates and 110 post-graduates, in which 92 study for master degrees and 18 for doctoral degrees.

Tianjin University always supports burgeoning disciplines so that facilities and infrastructures in the School  of Life Sciences could continue to improve. The schoolí»s first-term building of teaching and research has been put in use. Over 5,000 square metersí» floor area accommodates more than 1000 pieces of equipment and devices with value of more than RMB 50 million Yuan. There are P2 labs, cell culture chambers, bio-clean room (vaccine         room), cold room, crystal growth chamber, molecular biology lab, PCR room and large apparatus platforms.         Various experiment facilities include living cell confocal microscope, X-ray single crystal diffractometer, flow      cytometer, fluorescence inverse microscope, ultracentrifuge, large capacity ultracentrifuge, AKTA protein             separation system, microbe fermentation device and various ultra low temperature freezers. With these facilities,  School of Life Sciences now has been fully prepared for a wide range of biological studies.

The school is research-oriented by standing in global frontier of life studies and trying to meet national needs. Currently the school has been granted research funds of RMB 30 million Yuan for 49 approved projects, including Youth Scientist Feature Project in 973 Plan, National High-Tech Research Development Project, National Natural Science Fund projects, and Tianjin Technology Commission projects. All these projects set off to develop              scientific research in pathogenic mechanism in terms of molecular virology, host defense mechanism, vaccine      development, structural biology, translational medicine and oncology. School of Life Sciences has already             published a bunch of first-author research papers in magazines like Nature Communications, Journal of Virology  and PNAS.

It is of great significance for the school to develop by reinforcing academic collaboration with foreign             institutes and universities. 50% of current full-time faculty members have oversea background of employment or  education. Connections with universities at home or abroad, different academician labs, Chinese Center for          Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences have    been soundly built. Experts are constantly invited from institutes listed above for lectures, seminars and                 conferences so as to strengthen the comprehensive competitiveness of the school.

The development of Tianjin Binhai New Area has been taken into national developing strategy, while the       founding of Tianjin Joint International Academy of Biomedicine offered an opportunity for development of life    sciences and biomedicine industry. The School of Life Sciences of Tianjin University positively takes part in the  great cause to help develop Tianjin Binhai New Area, proactively serves for the social economic development of  Tianjin, keeps on its way to consolidating academic features, improves scientific research level and student           cultivation, and endeavors to realize the goal that School of Life Science at Tianjin University will earn its global competition and acknowledgement.
