President Li Jiajun Attends the 2nd Sino-EU Workshop on Engineering Education and Delivers a Keynote Speech

The 2nd Sino-EU Workshop on Engineering Education was held in Lisbon from May 24th to 25th, as a result of the Sino-EU Education Reform Platform recently established between the Chinese Ministry of Education and the LUSTER Network of Engineeirng Schools. TU President Li Jiajun was invited to attend the workshop and deliver a keynote speech. Also in attendance were TU representatives from the Office of Undergraduate Affairs and the International Cooperation Office.

The workshop was chaired by Prof.
Antonio Cruz Serra, President of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Manuel Valsassina Heitor, the Secretary of Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education in Portugal, extended a warm welcome to the representatives from China. He pointed out that common development among universities should be promoted through international cooperation, and this workshop would serve as a wonderful platform for the cooperation of higher education between China and Portugal. Director Chen Weijia, from the Chinese Ministry of Education, expressed his congratulations at the opening of the workshop and hoped for further cooperation in the field of education between the two countries, especially concerning joint training for innovative engineering talent.

In his keynote speech themed “TU’s Training System for Innovative Engineering Talents”, President Li first made a brief introduction to the important role of Tianjin in the development of Chinese modern industry, and the development and opening of Tianjin Binhai New Area. He then talked about the contribution of Tianjin University, the first modern university in China, to the development of Chinese higher engineering education. Subsequently, he turned his focus on the challenges  to the higher engineering education in the new era. President Li elaborated on “the criteria for training innovative engineering talents” that TU is working on in coping with the challenges, particularly the training mechanism consisting of quality system, ability system and knowledge system under the basis of an innovative engineering environment being developed at the University..

During the workshop, other keynote speeches were also delivered by Deputy Director General Liu Ju from the Ministry of Education, Ou Jinping, President of Dalian University of Technology, Chen Yiyi, Vice President of Tongji University, as well as the representatives from the European Policy Advisory Committee, the Innovation and Technology Policy Research Center and the LUSTER Network of Engineering Schools.

An in-depth discussion was made on curriculum design, credit transfer, personnel exchange,and joint research, about which a series of systematic plans were made. In the end, the Chinese Ministry of Education and the LUSTER Network of Engineeirng Schools jointly signed the “Lisbon Action Plan”.

The theme of the 2nd Sino-EU Workshop on Engineering Education is “Innovation and Intellectual Properties Management, The Sustainable Development of Engineering Education and the Joint Training of Students”. Representatives from 11 Chinese universities participated in the workshop, including Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Tianjin University, Tsinghua University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Dalian University of Technology, South China University of Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, China University of Petroleum, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and East China Science &Technology University. Representatives from LUSTER Network of Engineeirng Schools included Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH, Stockholm, Sweden), Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland), Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TUe, the Netherlands), Eécole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP, France), Politecnico di Torino (Polito, Italy), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Germany), Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU-Darmstadt, Germany), Université catholique de Louvain-Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (UCL-KUL, Belgium), Trinity College Dublin (TCD, Ireland), Universitat Politecnica de Catalunia (UPC-BarcelonaTech, Spain) and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST Lisbon, Portugal) and ESADE Business School (Spain) .
