TJU Men’s Basketball Team Wins Championship

The Tianjin University (TJU) Men’s Basketball Team won the championship in the College Students Basketball Competition of the 14th Tianjin Games and the 2018 Tianjin College Student Basketball Competition which was held in June.

The Games were sponsored by the Tianjin Municipal Government and organized by the Tianjin Administration of Sports and the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission. The 25 teams entering the Sunshine Group, including TJU team, were divided into 4 groups. The two top teams were selected from each group through the group games, followed by cross-elimination matches. In the semi-finals, the TJU team competitor was Tianjin Polytechnic University team, the defending champions on a winning streak. The opponents led by 11 points for a time and TJU Team was still 8 points behind in the last two minutes. From that moment, with superb defensive skills, A Bu from the TJU Team caused opposition turnovers and he scored a basket at the offensive end to even up the score. Through their offensive tactics, TJU Team retained ball possession after causing an illegal offensive play by their opponents. In the last seconds, A Bu came to the free-throw line with the ball, shooting an air ball through floater. It was just like Paul’s floater against SPURS in 2015. With that score, the TJU Team defeated the Tianjin Polytechnic University Team, reaching the finals.

In the final, their opponent was the Civil Aviation University of China. At the beginning, the Civil Aviation University of China paid a bitter price for its attempt to stop Chen Peng’s offense of the TJU team with individual defense. Wang Siran, a frontline man in the TJU team, continued to press the guard of the other team and got block shots due to turnovers by the opponent. At the offensive end, Wang Siran won numerous open scoring opportunities and assisted other team members to score with excellent give-and-go skills. Another frontline man, Gao Linghan, successfully got a rebound with excellent physical quality play and offensive skills. His performance was excellent with perimeter shots and his field goal percentage nearly reached 100%. Yu Zesheng also seized the opportunity to carry out man-to-man defense, stopping the opponent’s offensive plays. With the team's efforts, in the last quarter, the TJU team took an advantageous position. In the last moments of the game, Chen Peng and A Bu, inside and outside players respectively, stood at the free-throw line, enjoying the audience's cheers. At the final whistle, with the score of 64:52, the TJU Team had won the championship. The players embraced each other with loud cheering. They threw their coach up in the air and shouted “TJU, Champions!”
