Professor Giovanni Battista Barla Granted Honorary Professorship

Professor Giovanni Battista Barla was granted an honorary professorship of TJU at the Peiyang Park Campus on November 16, 2017. At the award ceremony, Zhong Denghua, Tianjin University President conferred the TJU honorary professorship on Professor Giovanni and Professor Barla expressed his gratitude for the award by Tianjin University.

Professor Giovanni was invited to deliver an academic lecture entitled “Challenges in the Understanding of TBM Tunnelling in Squeezing Conditions”. He explained how to apply the methods of indoor testing and in-situ monitoring to measure the impact of excavation on the ground, and analyzed 3D modeling for TBM excavation processes with a finite-discrete element method. Professor Giovanni Battista Barla is Editor of “Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering” (SCI impact factor: 2.905). He graduated in mining engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy. He later went to Columbia University where he obtained an MScEng degree and a PhD degree. His major research fields are rock mechanics, tunnel engineering, slope engineering, dam engineering and numerical methods for rock mechanics.
