Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education on Hydraulic Engineering Simulation and Safety Monitoring

Engineering Research Center of Hydraulic Engineering Simulation and Safety Monitoring of Ministry of Education was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and established in 2011, with Professor Zhong Denghua, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering as the present laboratory director and Chinese Academy of Engineering Professor Ma Hongqi as its director of the academic committee.

Relying on Tianjin University, the laboratory possesses two class-one doctoral disciplines: hydraulic engineering and naval architecture and ocean engineering. Founded in 1933, the discipline of hydraulic engineering has a long history and established the first hydraulic research institute at that time. Hydraulic engineering was awarded the national key discipline in 2007 and both hydraulic engineering and naval architecture and ocean engineering were awarded the key constructive disciplines of the “211 project” and “985 Project”. Now the laboratory is support by Changjiang Scholars innovative research team of Ministry of Education and the innovative research group of National Science Foundation who is committed to the basic research of the security of the key hydraulic engineering. The laboratory is staffed with 78 fixed officers including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 6 winners for National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 5 distinguished professors of Changjiang Scholars Program, 1 candidate for the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 4 national candidates for the New Century Talents Project, 13 New Century Excellent Researcher awarded by Ministry of Education. In recent five years, the laboratory has won 6 second prizes for National Science-Technology Advancement Award, 10 first prizes for Provincial Science-Technology Advancement Award and many other significant science and technology awards.
 
The laboratory is equipped with international advanced comprehensive experimental and monitoring system, and basically forms simulation and monitoring platform and physical simulation experiment platform these two platforms. It also possesses the only low temperature ice mechanics and ice engineering experiment system in China, the advanced multifunctional directional wave spectrum flow harbor basin, high-precision soft soil cyclic triaxial shear apparatus, large-scale and heavy-pressure deep-water structure testing equipment and so on.
 
The laboratory aims to solve the scientific and technical problems in the high-standard, high-quality construction and long-term safe operation in some major water conservancy projects, and to carry out original basic research as well as high-tech applied basic research. Additionally, the laboratory also focus on the scientific research based on the major hydraulic engineering simulation theory and technique, the multi-factor coupling dynamic action and catastrophe mechanism, the full life cycle safety analysis and risk control theory, the environmental and ecological effect and safety control theory of water conservancy projects, and the theories of port and ocean engineering construction and foundation coupling dynamic safety in order to develop key techniques with independent intellectual property rights and provide technical support for the construction and safe operation in the major water conservancy projects in our country. Meanwhile, it aims to promotes domestic and international academic exchanges and cooperation and strengthen the construction and training of talent team, striving for becoming a high-level base for academic exchange and talent cultivation of the hydraulic engineering discipline.
