Party Secretary Li Jiajun                                                   President Zhong Denghua

Remain true to our original aspirations, maintain the integrity of TJU and strive for new accomplishments

As we ring out the old and usher in the new, we are embracing a new start for the year ahead. On this happy occasion, I, and on behalf of the university, would like to extend cordial greetings and best wishes to the faculty, students, staff, including those who have retired, to TJU alumni around the globe, and to all those who are concerned with and constantly support the development of TJU.

As the saying goes, "one reaps what he sows". 2017 was a crucial year for TJU to implement the 13th "Five-year Plan" and to deepen reform on all fronts to build a world class university. We have proactively implemented the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, acted upon President Xi Jinping’s “Thoughts on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era", promoted rectification and reform through self-examination to enhance our capabilities through university governance, and successfully held the 10th Congress of Party Representatives. Through these efforts, we have accomplished many new things.

In the past year, we have cultivated talent of a higher caliber by pursuing a student-oriented development focus. We put into action the spirit of National Congress in Higher Institutions; we launched Tianjin University action roadmap to develop innovative engineering, taking the lead in China's Higher Engineering Education Reform; we initiated the "2030 Plan for a World Class Undergraduate Education" to cultivate talent with the integration of the general education and professional education, and cut-through talent cultivation. We coordinated part-time and full-time postgraduate education and piloted comprehensive reform in doctoral education. We were designated as a university for practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base. We scored excellent results in an array of contests including the International Chem-E-Car Final, the World Mandarin Debating Championships, the National Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Contest, the China Mechanics Competition in Honor of Zhou Peiyuan, and the China Mathematical Competition.

In the past year, we improved the capacity of the faculty through both introducing new staff and cultivating current staff. We advanced the personnel system, held the Peiyang Forum for Young Scientists and the Overseas Job Fair to attract new staff. Fourteen scholars were selected into the National Thousand Talent Program, half of whom were youths, three were newly recruited; fifteen were chosen to enter the Ten Thousand Talent Program, one was newly recruited; four as Changjiang Scholars. We introduced three National "Distinguished Young Scholars", and ten National “Excellent Young Scholars”, of whom four were newly recruited. Two experts in the National Thousand Talent Program were elected as foreign academicians to the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Faculty ethics was reinforced. Academician Wang Jingkang was elected as the Teaching Model of the Year.

In the past year, we refined our disciplinary structure by consolidating engineering, strengthening science, revitalizing humanities and developing medicine. We established the School of Network Security and the Ma Yinchu School of Economics, reestablished the School of Distance Education and Continuing Education, prepared to establish the School of Medical Science and Engineering and established numerous research institutes including the Research Institute of Biomedicine Engineering and Translational Medicine, and Research Institute of Disaster Medicine. We had one think tank chosen as one of the National Key Think Tanks and four providing information for CTTI. We published significantly more SSCI papers than last year, denoting an increasing influence in the humanities. We had seven disciplinary fields ranked among the top 1% and three among the top 0.1% by ESI standards.

In the past year, we saw a substantial improvement in innovation by focusing on national strategic demands and the frontiers of world scientific and technological development, and by taking on Chinese characteristics. We had four projects awarded the National Science and Technology Award, three awarded the National Leading Innovation Award and one rated as one of the ten "Scientific Progression of Higher Educational Institutions". We led 15 national key development projects and were granted an unprecedented increase in funding for scientific research. We published over 3,500 papers on SCI and two in Nature with Tianjin University as first author. We had five projects winning China Excellence Award in Patents and one in Ulterior Design, ranking TJU top among Chinese universities. We had 343 projects awarded National Fund for Natural Science grants.

In the past year, we made great strides towards internalization. The Georgia Tech Tianjin University Shenzhen Institute and the Tianjin University-University of Michigan (Nantong) Joint Research Institute were established. The School of International Engineers passed the authentication requirements for the CTI and for European Engineering Education. The Center for Bio-safety Research and Strategy attended the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) State Parties Meeting held at the UN Headquarters as one of 12 NGOs.

In the past year, we have optimized the natural and cultural environment of our campuses. Air conditioners were installed in dormitories of the Weijin Road Campus and the wireless service was upgraded on the Peiyang Park Campus. We were awarded the title National Civilized Campus. We held the 11th World Alumni Conference and published a series of books regarding TJU history and culture.

As we have in the past year, we will strive for further progress in the New Year. In 2018, we will put into action the blueprint laid out at the 10th Congress of Party Representatives and adhere to the principles of ''five always'': Always head in the right direction; always foster virtue through education; always serve the overall situation; always reform and innovate, and always maintain the integrity of TJU. We will strive to build a world class university on five fronts by deepening reform: in education to foster first-rate talent; in personnel training to maintain a world-class faculty; in resource allocation to establish first-class disciplines; in scientific research to reach a world-class academic standard, and; in internal management to gain world-wide acceptance.

Again, I wish all TJU people around the globe and all those who are concerned about TJU a happy and trouble-free New Year.
