AI Innovation Capacity Strengthens at Tianjin University

Recently, a retrieval analysis of Artificial Intelligence (AI) intellectual property rights showed that in the field of global AI, among the top 50 of effective patents, the first three places are occupied by IBM, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Microsoft; Tianjin University is ranked 11th and ranks fourth place among colleges and universities. This analysis reflects the ability for innovation in science and technology at Tianjin University in the field of AI.  

The AI industry is soaring worldwide. The AI patents mentioned in this analysis mainly referred to those which make a clear statement of an AI algorithm in their rights claim. The analysis shows the number of global effective AI patents is about 60,000 and the number of related patents is about 100,000; among which those applied by Chinese people increased sharply after 2008. 

Tianjin University is equipped with a solid foundation and superiority in many disciplines concerned with AI, such as cognitive computing, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, computer vision, speech signal processing, natural language processing and so on. At the same time, it has also made significant achievements in the fields of smart grids, smart dams, smart cities, smart robots, UAV intelligent control, unmanned vehicles, computer chips and so on. Nowadays Tianjin University is promoting an integrated layout and development of talent cultivation, discipline construction and the study of science and technology under the general guidance of China and Tianjin city to create better AI in a new age. Tianjin University also established the School of Artificial Intelligence and the College of Intelligence and Computing, which promotes in depth interdisciplinary cooperation. Taking AI as the core and blending it into traditional strong disciplines, the College of Intelligence and Computing constructs disciplines, reforms the models of talent training and accelerates the promotion of scientific research into the era of AI, to make a tremendous contribution to the development of AI technology and the AI industry for Tianjin and China.
