 Campus

On May 6, the opening ceremony of Psychological Health Month and the launching of the new Psychological Quality Development Center at the Peiyangyuan Campus was held at Tianjin University (TJU). There was a psychological sports meeting after the opening ceremony.

TJU Vice President Zhang Fengbao and Deputy Director Ma Dongyuan of Tianjin Student Mental Health Development Center attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Delegates from other universities in Tianjin were also invited to the ceremony.

TJU’s Vice-President, Zhang Fengbao said, meeting people’s health needs in every way and at any time is crucial for the country’s expectations at a time when China enters a new development phase. TJU has been trying hard to improve its students’ psychological health by all means under a new and innovative educational model. The Psychological Quality Development Centers not only provide a practicing space for Psychological Health, a required course for Chinese college students, but also help build TJU as a world class university with Chinese and Tianjin University characteristics. At the same time, he expected there would be more exchange between TJU and other universities on psychological education, thus improving the psychological health of Tianjin students.

Deputy Director Ma Dongyuan said it is the educators’ due responsibility to improve psychological education in universities. May 25 is the College Students’ Psychological Health Day in China, and there are other activities throughout May. The Center has organized a series of activities during this month, in which psychological education resources of the universities in Tianjin have been gathered to popularize psychological health education. The education center at the Peiyangyuan Campus has integrated numerous persons’ hard work and is crucial to TJU’s education system. Ma hoped that there would be further education plans featuring TJU’s uniqueness. After the speeches came the unveiling ceremony.

Later, the psychological sports meeting began with 25 student teams from universities and colleges in Tianjin taking part in psychological games.

The first game was the Caterpillar Ride, in which students rode on a huge “caterpillar” and moved forward. It was a game for teamwork and cooperation. Then followed Circling Run, Relay Jump, and many other games. In these games, students learned to trust their teammates and cooperate and communicate with each other.

At the end of the sports meeting a mysterious game, “Giant paint with your fellows” was played. In this game, on a giant drawing board with the words “Welcome to the TJU Psychological Quality Development Center” was divided into several parts, and each team was required to paint separately and then splice them into an integrate whole. Through this game, the students learned how to deal with cooperation and competition, between individuals and the group. They all agreed that each of them was a competitor in the competition, but in cooperation they all worked as a team. This is symbolic of the TJU students’ personality.

There were other activities apart from the games. Students from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts were invited to teach others how to paint on a circular fan and paper-made umbrella. With the help of these Fine Arts students, the students finally finished the huge painting. In the end, the School of Computer Science and Technology team won the group prize. Teams from the Qiushi Honors College and the School of Mathematics won the second and third prizes respectively. The organizers said that the ranking was not the most important thing: it was the cooperation, the unity of students, and the enjoyment through the process that mattered. All of these would be a precious experience in the students’ growth.

Statistics show that the Psychological Health Education Center at the Weijin Road Campus occupies an area of 2.1 square kilometers and came into use in 2015. There have been over 400 training events since its foundation, and more than 30,000 people have benefited from it. The Center at the Peiyangyuan Campus came into use on May 6, and it is expected to help improve the psychological health of the 20,000 students on this campus.
