Let's meet some of the femal role models at Tianjin University who are driving change in their workplace, their communities and beyond, through their relentless pursuit of excellence in their fields of expertise.

Professor Liu Xiuyun from the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering

Liu Xiuyun is a professor and doctoral supervisor of Tianjin University, as well as the chief scientist of a Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Currently, she serves as the Vice Dean of Tianjin University’s Medical School.

As a professor in biomedical engineering, her research focuses on neurointensive care and biomedical engineering, aiming at addressing the engineering bottlenecks faced by neurointensive care and provide clinicians with more accurate treatment methods and strategies.

Prof. Liu Xiuyun is responsible for teaching eight undergraduate and graduate courses. She has undertaken or participated in the construction of three English-taught courses, one of which is an Excellent Course of TJU. “Cellular Mechanisms and Neural Network of Brain Function”, one of the English-taught courses she leads, has been highly praised by students at home and abroad. Through group discussions, case analysis, flipped classrooms and other methods, students are encouraged to learn by doing and practice.

Prof. Liu Xiuyun and her students engage themselves in the research in the intensive care units (ICU) at hospitals such as Tianjin General Hospital and Tianjin Huanhu Hospital. The personalized optimal cerebral perfusion technology she developed has been applied in clinical practices at Vancouver General Hospital in Canada and Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States, treating patients undergoing heart bypass surgery and those with brain trauma. She was the first in China to introduce cerebrospinal fluid dynamics assessment technology to help diagnose patients with hydrocephalus. Currently, this technology is being utilized at Tianjin Huanhu Hospital and Tianjin General Hospital, benefiting over 200 hydrocephalus patients.

In the 17th iCAN Innovation Contest, her students have won the first prize in the Tianjin division, and she herself has received the Outstanding Instructor award.

Prof. Liu Xiuyun has been recognized as the outstanding class advisor of the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering (2021-2022) and the outstanding mentor of Tianjin University for 2023.
