【Crabapple Blossom Festival】Appealing Science Popularization Activities

 Research

In front of the School of Life Sciences, members of the iGEM team, who have won five gold medals in the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition, were sharing their self-innovated method of recycling waste PET with faculty, students, and visitors.

Rich science popularization activities also attracted many children to participate. A group of students majoring in biology exhibited their outstanding works of microbial painting. The logo and gate of Tianjin University, the logo of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games and other classic elements were painted on the canvas with microorganisms. The integration of science and art has created a different kind of beauty. It was known that all these works come from previous students of biology-related majors from Tianjin University, which can be regarded as their mastery and unique skills. Through genetic modification and other technologies, they made use of the properties of E. coli, successfully enabling microorganisms to present different colors with a distinctive style. What they painted were not only scientific materials but also artistic works.

There was nothing more appealing to children than experiencing the DNA Origami and operating the microscope. These two activities, dynamic or static, complemented each other. In the origami area, the children had a “close encounter” with the cutting-edge science——touching the mysterious molecular structure with their own hands, to slowly unravel the secrets of life by themselves. While in the microscope operation area, meticulous children were leaning down to explore the mysteries of science, unwilling to leave.
