Professor Shan Ping

Shan Ping was born in May, 1946 in Anshan, Liaoning Province. After his graduation from the Welding Engineering Major from the Mechanical Department of Tianjin University in 1968, he got his Master’s Degree of the same major at Tianjin University. Then he received his PhD in 1985, being the first doctoral student cultivated independently by Tianjin University.
In June 1997, Professor Shan Ping was appointed as President of Tianjin University (1997-2006), and Chairman of Academic Committee and Degree Committee of the University. Prior to that, he worked as Deputy Director of Welding Engineering Division, Deputy Dean of Mechanical Department (1994-1997), Vice Provost (1992-1993), Provost (1993-1994), and Vice President of the University, Director of the National Education Commission Management Cadres Training Center and Standing Member of the Committee of the Communist Party (concurrent) (1994-1997). Professor Shan Ping is also the Director of IIW (International Institution of Welding) Board of Directors, Executive Director of Mechanical Engineering Society and Vice-president of Welding Society in China. He was elected as Member of the 9th and 10th People’s Congress of China and was Member of the Standing Committee of Tianjin People’s Congress, Member of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the CPC.
