2019 Spring Commencement Ceremony Held

On January 22, Tianjin University’s 2019 Spring Commencement Ceremony was held on the Weijin Road Campus with 186 doctoral students and 2,291 Master’s students receiving their degrees.

University leaders, alumni and representatives of teachers sent their warm wishes to the graduates on the scene. Additionally, Tianjin University prepared customized "graduation gifts" – “Wufu” (five blessings) for all the graduates attending this ceremony. Each of these five characters of “fu” had its own meaning, wishing the graduates cultural self-confidence and that they will contribute to the national development and reach success with "TJU Characteristics" and good fortune in any part of the country, and often bring them back “home” to visit their alma mater.

Approximately 3,000 people attended the event. The ceremony was hosted by Vice President Wang Shuxin and began with a majestic rendition of the national anthem.

President Zhong Denghua, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a speech entitled “To be a generation that work hard to make China strong" at the graduation ceremony. "You have become the ‘generation to make China strong' to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!" At the commencement ceremony, President Zhong Denghua asked the graduates, “As a ‘generation to make China strong', you have a more glorious mission and a more difficult task. In the face of the historical mission of building China into a modern socialist country and realizing the great revitalization of the Chinese nation, I hope that you will become a ‘generation to make China strong’ and have the courage to take on your responsibilities and create the future.” Tianjin University has been on a mission of "revitalizing the country through developing education" since its establishment. "Rejuvenation of the country" is the responsibility of TJU people. President Zhong said, as a "powerful generation", graduates should keep their feet on the ground, and be the doers of the new era; they should be diligent in practice and be brave innovators in the new era; they should be determined to become brave pioneers in the new era and strive to be a "powerful generation".

ENNGroup Chief Technology Officer and a representative of TJU alumni Li Jinlai, shared the story of his studies and struggles at the ceremony and expressed his warm congratulations and best wishes to the graduates and his great respect to the teachers, students and staff of his alma mater. Li said that graduates should take up the responsibility of the times, challenge themselves and dare to explore new fields. “Being at a crucial stage of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, we should combine our personal struggle with the future of our country, the destiny of the nation and happiness of people.” He encouraged graduates to "be ambitious, innovative and responsible TJU students who contribute to the motherland and society in their respective jobs, rising to the expectations of TJU and the times".

Jiang Mingjing, professor of the School of Civil Engineering, doctoral supervisor and national Distinguished Young Scholar, delivered a speech as the supervisor representative. "No matter what career you pursue in the future, no matter what starting point you take, you should keep your feet on the ground and persevere." Jiang Mingjing told graduates that success requires profound knowledge. "If you have a dream, move on and stick to it." "Once you enter TJU, you will always be a TJUer." He hoped that students could continue to adhere to and carry forward the character of TJU, and make use of the professional methods and ability gained from their alma mater to forge ahead and keep innovating, and write a brilliant chapter of life through unremitting struggle!

Sui Xin, a doctoral student of the School of Mechanical Engineering, beginning his doctoral career in 2014, spoke on behalf of graduate students. During his eight years of study at Tianjin University, he witnessed the great development and changes of the university and felt "honored". During the school years, under the careful guidance of his supervisor, Sui Xin participated in and completed two national natural science foundation projects, more than 10 academic papers in journals such as Science Citation Index (SCI) and The Engineering Index (EI), won national scholarships for undergraduate and doctoral studies, and was awarded as the outstanding student of Tianjin. After graduation, he resolutely devoted himself to the cause of national defense. With his solid and comprehensive professional skills, he practiced the social responsibility of benefiting the country and the people, and encouraged himself to forge ahead to contribute to the development of the national defense of the motherland.

At the ceremony, Zheng Gang, Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School, read out “the Resolution of the Academic Degree Assessment Committee of Tianjin University on Awarding Doctoral and Master Degrees”.

The doctoral graduates first walked on the rostrum in turn, then the Master's students. School leaders and the Degree Committee members bestowed the degrees for them and tossed their tassels.

At the ceremony, every graduate received not only the inculcation of their teachers, but also the full "blessings" of their alma mater - a special graduation gift: the customized version of "five blessings". With the approaching Spring Festival, the character "fu" conveys people's yearning for a happy life and wishes for a better future.

The “Wufu” or “five blessings” were written respectively by TJU Professor Peng Yigang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Feng Jicai, Director of the Feng Jicai Institute of Literature and Art at Tianjin University, Party Secretary Li Jiajun, President Zhong Denghua, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Liu Ziheng, a freshman majoring in Intelligent Medical Engineering, using the Brain-Controlled Intelligent Arm Robot, "Na Cha", which was the latest achievement of a neural engineering team at Tianjin University. These “fu” represented five aspects of TJU characteristics, which are Patriotism and Devotion, Revitalization of Country through Education, Seeking Truth from Facts, Rigorous Scholarship and Innovation.
