Tianjin University Tops the List of the First Batch of National Major and Special R&D Projects

Recently, 29 National Major and Special Projects of the National Key Research and Development (R&D) Plan, were assessed and the annual 2016 list of projects, were published on the public service platform of National Science and Technology Information System. Tianjin University leads 13 programs with total funding of RMB 295 million, standing in the front rank in China.

These National Key Research and Development Programs, are regarded as the most important administrative reforms in National Technology and Science Development programs, and are regarded highly and are paid widespread attention. Tianjin University has multiple disciplines, including chemical engineering, water resources engineering, manufacture and architecture. And more than half of its projects in the evaluation belonged to these traditional disciplines.

Responding to the government call, Tianjin University supports the nation’s long-term targets and strategy demands in aiming at continually being the latest in the world in science and technology development and innovation. In the newscientific and technologicalundertakings, including biological safety, electronic materials, and deep sea technology, Tianjin University leads other related projects. The project “Thin Film Transistor (TFT) printing material and devices” is a very good example. It belongs to the field flexible electronics and is a new growing point in information science, which can mainly be used in “Green" flexible electronic paper, flexible cell phones and Wearable devices. This project may help it establish a leading global position in printing and display technology, and may promote the development in Thin Film Transistor printing material and related industries.

In recent years, some deadly infectious diseases have spread widely, and have been a major threat to China’s biological safety and the One Belt And One Road strategy. And now, there is no technology in China which would satisfy the need for level BSL~4 in biological safety protection. Led by Professor Li Wei from Tianjin University, “High level of biological safety of pathogenic micro-organism protection technology and products for the laboratory” is a response to this requirement. It aims at developing basic protection, airtight protection, high efficiency filtration, disinfection, sterilization and other key technologies and equipment with self-owned intellectual property rights. What’s more, among all the Tianjin University’s projects, OLED Device Fabrication Ink-jet Printing Technology, led by professor Wang Shirong, has gained funding support up to 40 million RMB.

"Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, the research and development programs are regarded as an integrated symbol of the University’s competitiveness and influence in scientific research. During the last five years (“Twelfth Five-Year Plan”), Tianjin University made rapid developments in scientific research: It gained funding support up to 9744 million RMB, which was 2.6 times as much as the fund during “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”. It was approved by the National Natural Science Foundation for funding of 1.04 billion RMB, which was 3.9 times as much as the fund during “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”. There were more than 1000 SCI papers published by its professors, which was twice as many as the amount during “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”. It has achieved 11 awards of Chinese honorable patents and one outstanding patent (the first gold medal in Tianjin in the last 20 years). Only in the year 2015, 5 honorable patents were awarded, which ranks it top among enterprises and institutions in China. In 2015, Tianjin University achieved 5 National Science and Technology awards, which ranked it third among colleges and universities domestically.
