International Students Attracted By Traditional Chinese Culture

 

Recently, Tianjin University collaborated with the Tianjin People’s Art Gallery to launch a Tianjin University International Students’ Cultural Experience Base. After the unveiling ceremony, international students from the School of International Education of Tianjin University visited the Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition, and were impressed by the artistic charm of the traditional Chinese culture.

Appreciate the artistic emotion of traditional Chinese Painting

After the unveiling ceremony, the international students visited the “Pen and Ink for Beauty of Youth” an excellent works exhibition of young female artists. This exhibition showcased great works. The works included; as flower-bird fine brushworks, impressionistic landscape paintings, portraits, as well as landscape paintings. During the exhibition there was a young lady artist drawing an orchid painting. The international students were deeply fascinated by the artistic emotion of these excellent works.

Russian student Dalia said “I really appreciate the artistic emotion of Chinese Paintings, these great works help me keep the peace within myself. This is amazing!” She also told the journalist that she had never visit any Chinese painting exhibition before. Another Thai student, Lin Lingzhu said

"I always looked for more opportunities to deeper understand Chinese paintings”. She was deeply impressed by the beauty and artistry of the paintings displayed at the Tianjin University International Students’ Cultural Experience Base.

The first attempt to write with Chinese brush

In the creation studio at the eighth floor, the international students were guided by the Tianjin People’s Art Gallery calligraphy teacher, Hao Jinbao to learn Chinese calligraphy. A girl from the Ukraine named Nana wrote “我爱你中国 (I love you China)” using a Chinese brush. She gained warm applause. Nana told journalist that she had been studying in the School of International Education of at Tianjin University for three years. “I like all Chinese paintings and also calligraphy, I am interested in traditional Chinese Culture such as Peking Opera and cross-talk. I would like the opportunity to get to know more about Chinese culture. In the future, I will attend this cultural experience base often”.

A Thai student Zheng Jielun wrote “追求 (pursue)” using the Chinese brush. He named himself after his hero Zhou Jielun (Jay Chou), a Chinese musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, director, and actor. Zhou Jielun said “I am a big fan of Zhou Jielun, he regularly fuses traditional Chinese instruments and styles with R&B (Rhythm & Blues) or rock to form a new genre called “Chinese Style Music, I learned a lot of traditional Chinese culture through his songs”. He said that he was also interested in traditional Chinese opera and folk art forms. “I would like to learn Chinese Allegro and perform for my family, which would be super cool!”

Mr. Chen, the Dean of the School of International Education of Tianjin University, told the journalist that Tianjin University (TJU) attached great importance to international students’ cultural activities. The Tianjin University International Students’ Cultural Experience Base will organize various activities and events for international students. Those events will include tours of traditional cultural and art scenic spots, experiences of folk customs, language practices and their applications, and investigations for China’s development. The events and activities will play a major role in assisting international students to properly understand China’s new role, enrich their cultural life, and assist them better experiencing and learning Chinese culture.
