【Commencement 2024】Inspirational Speeches and Aspirations for Undergraduate Students

Tianjin University recently held its 2024 undergraduate commencement ceremony, where several university leaders, alumni, faculty, and student representatives delivered speeches to send off the graduating students with best wishes and heartfelt advice.

In his address, President Jin Donghan encouraged the undergraduates to embrace both grand and humble ambitions. "From today onwards, most of you will transition from students to alumni. I want to share the words 'Within the small space lies a vast world.' The heart, though small, can hold a grand vision," he said.

Jin emphasized the importance of integrating personal ambitions with broader societal goals and maintaining resilience to face external challenges. He urged the students to commit to lifelong learning and practical action, embodying the university's motto to transform China through practical efforts.

Sun Tao, Party Secretary of the School of Mechanical Engineering, highlighted the memorable experiences of the undergraduates. "You have witnessed our 125th anniversary, experienced project-based courses, and participated in the China International College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. These years at Tianjin University will remain unforgettable," he said. Sun encouraged students to seek truth, be profound, and strive for progress. He reminded them of the university's spirit and urged them to carry forward the values of hard work and innovation.

Gao Xiang, President of China International Marine Containers (Group) Co.,Ltd. (CIMC) Group and an alumnus, shared his journey and insights. He advised students to inspire self-drive, maintain perseverance, and commit to lifelong learning to become versatile professionals. Gao emphasized the importance of teamwork and collective consciousness in achieving success. "Thank you again to Tianjin University for this opportunity to share. I believe every student from Tianjin University will be proud of their heritage. Wishing our alma mater continued success and brilliance! Wishing all students a bright future and smooth sailing!"

Malaysian student Foong Yan Lin from the School of Marine Science and Technology expressed gratitude on behalf of all international undergraduates. "Please allow me to extend our heartfelt gratitude and highest respect to our alma mater for nurturing us, to our teachers for imparting knowledge, and to our families and friends for their silent support and companionship," he said. Foong shared his experiences at Tianjin University and his participation in writing a letter to President Xi Jinping, pledging to promote China-Malaysia friendship and use his knowledge to serve both countries. "In the future, I hope to return to my second hometown, Tianjin, as an alumnus and report to my alma mater the contributions I have made to strengthening China-Malaysia friendship."

Sheng Xinlei from the School of Architecture spoke on behalf of the graduating students, expressing sincere gratitude to the university, teachers, and family. "Studying at Tianjin University, we have not only had unforgettable times but also developed a sense of national pride and a commitment to achieving great things. The school motto inspires us to take root downward and grow upward, writing the youthful chapter of responsibility and courage," she said. Sheng shared her passion for urban and rural planning and her decision to pursue a doctoral degree at Tianjin University, aiming to serve the national marine strategy and contribute to the country's development.
