Feng Shaowu: Innovating Medical Devices and Transforming Healthcare

 Research

Feng Shaowu, aPh.D. Candidate at the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, adeptly juggles the demanding roles of a Ph.D. candidate and a general manager. Feng has distinguished himself not only through significant academic achievements but also by successfully transforming scientific advancements into practical applications. His innovative spirit and specialized expertise have driven the development of cutting-edge diagnostic and medical devices, positioning him at the forefront of global medical technology standards.

In June 2023, Feng founded Kaier Instruments (Tianjin) Co., Ltd., a company dedicated to the innovation and development of medical device testing equipment. This venture is focused on enhancing medical safety and reducing associated risks. Feng's passion for mechanical manufacturing began during his undergraduate studies, where he demonstrated exceptional skills in the field. Under the mentorship of Professor Chen Gang, Feng directed his graduate research towards the development of medical devices, gaining extensive experience along the way.

Feng's entrepreneurial journey began in 2018 when he co-founded a company with his mentor, taking on the role of head of research and development. Here, he led the innovation of six products, setting the stage for the establishment of his own enterprise in the Tiankai Higher Education Innovation Park.

Among Feng's technological innovations are electromagnetic linear motors, which significantly reduce the energy consumption of testing equipment while enhancing their efficiency. He also developed dynamic controllers based on self-disturbance control algorithms, which address the challenges of long-term testing under complex stress conditions. In collaboration with the Tianjin Medical Device Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, Feng's team has validated the reliability and efficacy of their equipment, ensuring compliance with international standards, and making a decisive move into the medical device industry.

Currently, Kaier Instruments offers two primary products: one for testing artificial blood vessels or stent devices and another for artificial joints. The company also performs fatigue testing on both newly marketed and existing medical devices. "Higher education institutions and research labs extensively utilize such equipment, indicating a significantly large market," Feng said.

Despite the modest size of Feng's company, it has achieved impressive performance, rapidly reaching profitability since its inception. His team is actively recruiting talent to support business and research expansion. Looking ahead, Feng plans to explore new fields, such as testing equipment for the battery industry, to tap into new markets.

Feng's entrepreneurial journey exemplifies the seamless integration of scientific research with business practice. He has not only realized his personal scientific ambitions but has also made substantial contributions to society.
