 Research

On April 16, 2023, IEEE PES Day2023 China-themed event and the seminar “Engaging Diversified Sustainability towards Carbon Neutrality” was successfully held in the D/E lecture hall of Teaching Building 26 of Tianjin University, and simultaneously broadcast live to the world. Eight outstanding professors and scholars from universities includingAuckland University of Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Tianjin University, as well as cooperative enterprises such as Tianjin Electric Power Company, were invited to participate in the forum and share exciting academic reports.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Jia Hongjie of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering. Professor Wang Chengshan of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, academician of the CAE, Jessica Bian, chairman of IEEE PES, and Professor Bie Chaohong, chairman of IEEE PCCC and vice president of Xi'an Jiaotong University addressed the opening ceremony.

At the beginning of the ceremony, academician Wang Chengshan welcomed the guests. He then elaborated on the necessity for event in the context of global climate change and expressed his gratitude for the significant contributions made by IEEE PES in conference preparation, talent cultivation, and other aspects. Bian introduced the development of IEEE PES from the aspects of its history, research direction, research achievements, talent cultivation, and conference themes. He sincerely invited outstanding young scholars from both online and offline conferences to join IEEE PES where they can have the chance to exploit their talents and achieve extraordinary career. Professor Bie Chaohong, Chairman of IEEE PCCC, introduced the current development condition of IEEE PCCC and the prospects of local branches and student branches, and expressed good wishes to IEEE PES in China and its branches.

Then, Professor Mu Yunfei of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the Ambassador of IEEE PES Day China 2023, introduced the organization and the implementation of this year’s IEEE PES Day. Chairman Bian shared his work experience at IEEE under the title "A Ladder to Techno-Professional Advancements in Power Engineering".

Mu shared his views on the theme "Diversity and Sustainability towards Carbon Neutrality", and concluded with a presentation on recruitment and training for China ambassadors of IEEE PES Day. He predicted IEEE PES Day would bring together more universities and enterprises to open a new chapter in the development of the power industry in the context of carbon neutrality. Bian introduced the concept, research direction, joining process, and advantages of IEEE education assistance of IEEE PES, during which teachers and students understood more details about IEEE PES and encouraging young scholars gained enthusiasm to join IEEE PES.

The technical session of the report is chaired by Professor Hou Kai of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Tianjin Ambassador of IEEE PES Day 2023. Professor Tek Tjing Lie, Dean of the School of Engineering Computer and Mathematics at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, and Professor He Jinwei of TJU, a candidate for the National Youth Talent Program, and Dr. Zu Guoqiang, a senior engineer of State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company, gave brilliant academic reports on "Hierarchical Control Strategies for DC Microgrids Clusters in Distribution Systems", "Interlinking distribution networks using multi port PWM current source converters" and "Innovative Practice of Tianjin New Power System". Moreover, at the topic of carbon neutrality, they conducted deep communication and discussions with the attending experts and young scholars. It was a high-level academic feast with strong academic atmosphere.

Professor Tek-Tjing Lie showed the advantages and disadvantages of different control strategies for DC microgrids clusters, and the application effects of hierarchical clustering methods in DC microgrids clusters. Professor Lie pointed out that the penetration rate of renewable energy in DC microgrids is increasing, and its intermittent power generation poses new challenges to the stability and reliability of distribution systems. So microgrids clusters must be coordinated in a seamless manner and he proposed two modes: time triggered control mode and event triggered control mode. Finally, Professor Lie carefully explained and analyzed the effects of the above two different control modes, clarifying the suitable situation of different microgrids clusters control strategies.

Professor He Jinwei described the advantages of current source converters, including their small size, the absence of bus capacitors, and its drawbacks of common mode current. Aiming at the drawbacks, he proposed the 3CR SVM method, which can effectively suppress the common mode current of parallel back-to-back current source while also reducing manufacturing costs; In addition, he introduced his research achievements in DC control of extremely low switching frequency current sources and shared his experience and insights in his research.

Dr. Zu Guoqiang of State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company introduced the company's typical innovative practice in the field of electricity distribution in recent years, combining major scientific and technological projects and demonstration projects such as the National Key R&D Program for Electric Vehicle to Grid Interaction.

The roundtable discussion session was chaired by Professor Xu Tao from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering. The teachers and students actively asked questions and discussed with guests on "How to map the career for female engineers", "How to achieve career growth for IEEE PES student members with the platform advantages ", "DC Microgrids Clusters grid-connected mode", "Future development trends of new power systems and the application of vehicle grid interaction in Tianjin Power Grid". Guests answered the questions carefully and encouraged young teachers and students to explore their ideas relying on the IEEE PES platform. The atmosphere was very lively.

IEEE PES Day 2023 China Theme event was jointly supported by IEEE PCCC, School of Electrical and Information Engineering of Tianjin University, Tianjin Power Supply Society and Energy Systems Integration Journal. Meanwhile in order to allow domestic and foreign scholars to watch the forum, it was held both online and offline, and we simultaneously broadcast three live streams: Tencent Conference, Zoom Conference, and Bilibili Live which received enthusiasm response. In addition to the conference organizers, more than 200 experts, scholars, and students in the field of electricity and energy from Tianjin University, Tianjin Qiushi Company, and other institutions participated in the forum, marking the beginning of the IEEE PES Day event for each branch this year.

IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) is a global forum with the largest number of fans and members in the education field, whose role is to share the latest technological developments in the power industry and develop standards for the development and construction of the equipment and system. The mission of PES is to become a leading provider of electrical energy science and engineering information, covering the security, sustainability, economy, and reliable conversion, generation, transmission, distribution, storage, and the research, development, planning, design, construction, maintenance, installation, operation, and control of electrical equipment, structures, materials, and power systems, including power metering devices. On April 22, 2008, former IEEE PES Chairman Wanda Reder announced the renaming of the Engineering Society to Power&Energy Society, and IEEE PES Day was established to commemorate the official naming. Since 2018, IEEE PES Day and its branch events have been held every April. The theme for IEEE PES Day China in 2023 will be "Diversified Sustainability wards Carbon Neutrality".

IEEE PES DAY 2023 China theme event was held successfully, which will enhance the exchanges of experience of hot research achievements and engineering application in the field of power system automation, promote academic exploration and research cooperation in relevant fields worldwide, support the rapid development of China's power system operation, planning, and economic technology, and promote the exchange and cooperation among small, medium, and large enterprises, as well as the internationalization process.
