First Tianjin Microbiology Art Contest Concluded Successfully

The first Tianjin "Leike Cup" Microbiology Art Contest jointly organized by Youth League Committee of Tianjin University and the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University was successfully concluded.

Altogether 76 works from higher institutions including Tianjin University, Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin University of Science and Technology were submitted, of which 5 were first prize, 10 were second prize and 25 were third prize.

Wang Zhiwen, chairman of the organizing committee, fully affirmed the significance of the contest, which was dedicated to the 20th National Congress with the theme of Embarking on a New Journey for a New Era. Wang was glad to see the positive responses received from universities in Tianjin. He said, “these dazzling microbial paintings show the vitality of art in science and the spirit of young people in the new era. I hope this competition arouses more students to look for art in science, and I look forward to more fine art work in the future.”

Wang Jun, professor of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University, sent his wishes to all contestants, “I hope you can take this contest as an opportunity on your way forward. With unremitting efforts and great tenacity, you can pool the strength of youth to the development of S&D research. You are the rising star in realizing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!”

The aim of the contest is to combine science and art and promote innovation through aesthetic activities. It is in line with the development goal of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University, which is “setting world-class standards, cultivating top-notch talents, making leading achievements and significant contributions”.

In 2021, the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University introduced Microbial Art as a new form of Civics assessment in microbiology laboratory classes. With petri dishes being canvas and microorganisms pigments, a number of unique microbial paintings went viral in social media and were highly commended by mainstream media such as People's Daily Online, CCTV News and Guangming Online.
