Closing Ceremony of ​China-ASEAN Online Program Held

On January 21, the closing ceremony of China-ASEAN Online Program on Data Science and Big Data Analysis was held online. Students from ASEAN and the countries along the Belt and Road route and program teachers gathered again to witness the fruits of their studies and shared their joy of graduation.

Professor Hu Wenping, vice president of Tianjin University attended the ceremony and delivered a greeting speech.

He congratulated all students on completing the program study and expressed thanks to the program faculty. He said that in face of Covid-19 pandemic which rendered face-to-face communication impossible in the past year, Tianjin University had established a "cloud" platform forexchanges between China and ASEAN countries andhosted various types of online activities that saw fruitful results. “My dear students, in the past three months, you roamed in the ocean of mathematics and big data and achieved great success. It is our sincere wish that the program willstrengthen the talents pool in the field of digital economy in ASEAN and countries along the Belt and Road Initiative,” Prof. Hu said, adding that he fully appreciated the support of the students, the hard work of the teachers and staff, and welcomed all students to continue their further studies in Tianjin University.

The ceremony played the program review video which recorded students' learning experience and the gratitude and blessings felt by teachers and students.

For Duan Yuping, Professor of TJU’s Center of Applied Mathematics, to be a program teacher was challenging yet awarding, “There are always unexpected happy surprises that make me love my job.” Du also expressed her congratulations to program students and wished them a bright future.

Lin Liy Yee from Malaysia, as a student representative, said excitedly that she could still remember her anticipation at the beginning of the program, her perseverance in studying and most impressive, her joy of obtaining the certificate. She hoped to participate more exchange activities held by TJU’s School of Mathematics.

Yap Teck Lee, another student representative, took the program as an in-service education. “The past three months were challenging and exciting for me and I think it is of great value for my future career development.” In Lee’s eyes, the teachers and staff of Tianjin University were "dedicated, enthusiastic, diligent, innovative and caring". “Thank you very much, teachers,” Lee expressed his gratitude in Chinese.

China-ASEAN Online Program on Data Science and Big Data Analysis attracted 35 foreign students from ASEAN and the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. The program started in September 2020 and lasted for more than three months. Adopting an online English teaching mode, the program was equipped with a team of course teachers, academic tutors and student assistants, and completed more than 190 class hours of "cloud" lessons and "cloud" practice, helping students consolidate their theoretical knowledge of data science and improve their practical ability in specific issues such as image processing, character recognition, data mining. Twenty-three students have completed the courses and practice tasks, passed the examination and defense, and obtained the graduation certificates and program souvenirs. Twelve of them were awarded the title of excellent students.
