Supporting Countryside Education at Fengyu and Shengzhou

 Campus

In the summer of 2020, a volunteer group comprising 16 students from Tianjin University’s College of Management and Economics (CoME) offered free online courses for some primary school students at Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province and Fengyu Town in Dali, Yunnan Province. The team was supervised by their teacher, Ma Yan-nan.

In celebration of TJU’s 120 anniversary in 2015, the faculty and students of CoME with the fund provided by alumni built a "Tianma Care" house for Xia-Wang Town Middle School at Shengzhou.“This year, we are going to celebrate our university’s 125th birthday. We came back to where we started five years ago as a way to remind our original aspiration, that is, to become useful people for the society.”One of the students said. The team designed a series of online courses about art and literature for the children of Xia Wang Town Middle School for 5 days in late July.

Another volunteer team tried online plus offline teaching for students at Yunnan Fengyu Training Camp which CoME has partnered up for education enhancement for seven years.

The team mailed the course materials prepared in advance to Yunnan and distributed them to the children with the help of Principal Yang Tao at Fengyu No. 1 Middle School.

At 9:00 am on August 10, the opening ceremony of 2020 Fengyu Online Training Camp in Yunnan was held. Over the next 10 days, volunteers gave online lessons about music, painting, the history of science and technology, Chinese culture, literature, and speech skills. When children had questions about the course of the day, they could directly ask the teacher of the corresponding course through WeChat group. The voluntary teachers would also share courseware and teaching videos through WeChat group.

On August 18, the team members Zhu Bei, Miao Yi-lin, Xu Yang, Fan Ke and Zhou Tian-cheng went to Yunnan in person and communicated with students face to face. They led the children to sum up what they had learnt in the camp and prepared a lively camp closing ceremony where children got the opportunity to show themselves.
