【Poverty Alleviation】Tianjin University’s “Million Yuan Grant Project” Launched in Tanchang

On September 3, Tianjin University launched the “Million Yuan Grant Project” at Jinmu School for nine-year compulsory education in Tanchang County, Gansu Province. To support the county, one million yuan have been raised by Tianjin University with the help of its alumni and the public to support financially about 1000 teachers and students covering four disadvantaged groups including teachers in difficulty, substitute teachers, impoverished students, and orphans and disabled students. Besides, supplies including new bags, stationery, and Kindle Reader are also offered.



Tianjin University has visited Tanchang County to learn about its current situation and actual needs. Through the “Peiyang Torch Project”, Tianjin University organized its faculty to provide one-to-one assistance to orphans and disabled children and helped improve local basic education in the form of material supplies and financial support.

“Supported by Tianjin University, in 2019, we received a donation of one million yuan from caring people to help with various funding activities organized by Tanchang County’s Education Bureau. This year, the university has raised another one million yuan from its faculty and alumni to help the county fight against poverty through education.” He Liqian, a staff of Tianjin University and deputy chief of Tanchang County, said.

Since Tianjin University began to help Tanchang County in 2013, it has been vigorously committed to poverty alleviation with education. It has set up the “Poverty Alleviation Fund for Education Revitalization” that has raised more than 5 million yuan, built 100 “Dream Classrooms”, and implemented the “Peiyang Torch Project”. Since 2019, 1640 volunteer individuals and 142 volunteer groups have been recruited by the university to assist students of Tanchang, among which more than 600 volunteers have been regularly communicating with them. Meanwhile, the university has carried out over 10,000 times of one-to-one tutorials and over 600 activities of collective assistance.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Tianjin University organized its students who volunteered to provide curricular and psychological counseling services online for more than 5000 students in Tanchang. To upgrade the local teachers’ abilities, the university conducted many special pieces of training such as “Preschool Education”, “Science Teacher of Middle School”, and “Epidemic Prevention and Control in Primary and Middle School”, in which more than 2000 local teachers participated in the past two years. To promote the comprehensive development of local education, including pre-school and basic education, the Primary School and the Kindergarten Affiliated to Tianjin University have also assisted primary schools and kindergartens in Tanchang to carry out the activity of “hand in hand” construction.
