 Global

The 13th UK-Europe-China Workshop on Millimetre-Waves and Terahertz Technologies (UCMMT2020) was successfully held online from August 29 to 31, 2020.The workshop was sponsored by Tianjin University’s School of Microelectronics and co-organized by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Xi'an Branch of China Academy of Space Technology (National Key Laboratory of Space Microwave Science and Technology), and Hebei University of Technology. More than 200 people attended the workshop, including well-known experts, young scholars, student representatives from domestic and foreign universities, and representatives of well-known companies at home and abroad.

Speech by Vice President Wenping Hu

During the opening ceremony on August 29, Prof.Wenping Hu, Vice President of Tianjin University delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers. He congratulated the opening of the conference and extended a warm welcome to experts and scholars from all over the world. President Hu said that artificial intelligence, 5G mobile communications, and imaging technology all represent the forefront of current electronic technology. With the rapid update of these cutting-edge technologies, millimeter wave and terahertz circuits and systems, as an important part of these emerging technologies, are playing a more important role in electronic information communication systems and facing new challenges and opportunities. The materials, equipment, designs, and manufacturing of millimeter wave and terahertz circuits are produced based on a global industrial chain. Therefore, international exchanges and cooperation must be strengthened to overcome challenges and pursue excellence. According to Hu, Tianjin University is always willing to work with experts and scholars at home and abroad to strengthen the academic exchange and cooperation about millimeter wave/terahertz circuits, and to discuss the problems and challenges encountered in the development of this field.

Speech by Prof. Kaixue Ma

Professor Qijun Zhang gives a report on behalf of the conference technical committee.

Professor Kaixue Ma, chairman of the UCMMT2020 conference and dean of the School of Microelectronics delivered a speech on behalf of the conference organizing committee. He reviewed the history of the UCMMT conference and introduced the organization of the conference. Then, Professor Qijun Zhang of Tianjin University introduced the submission and schedule of the conference on behalf of the conference technical committee.

Keynote Speakers of the conference

Six experts, including Mr. Renato Lombardi, Fellow of Huawei, Professor Biaobing Jin of Nanjing University, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Professor Raafat Mansour of the University of Waterloo, Dr. Nokibul Islam, Director of Electromagnetic Field Application Engineering Department of Changjiang Electronics Technology Group, Professor Jixin Chen of Southeast University and Professor Nick Ridler of National Physical Laboratory of UK, were invited to give presentations.

During the two-and-a-half-day conference, there were 23 group reports and 127 oral reports, covering topics such as millimeter wave/terahertz sources, devices, systems, and applications. The meeting closed at 6 pm on August 31.

The predecessor of the UK-Europe-China Workshop on Millimetre-Waves and Terahertz Technologies (UCMMT) was the UK-China Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Technology Seminar, which was founded in 2008 and initiated by the Royal Society of London and China Scholarship Council. The sponsor and lifetime honorary chairman is Liu Shenggang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2012, UCMMT was held in Nanjing, China, and its participants expanded to the European continent, reflecting the strong regional demand for closer cooperation in the advancement of terahertz science and technology. At present, UCMMT is held in Europe and China alternately every year, aiming to promote the exchanges and cooperation in the fields of millimeter wave and terahertz fields between the United Kingdom, the European continent, the Chinese academic community and the industry, and to provide a unique platform for sharing the development of related technologies. UCMMT focuses on the research of millimeter wave/terahertz sources, equipment, systems, and applications. The successful holding of the UCMMT conference at Tianjin University will greatly promote the development of related disciplines of Tianjin University and the millimeter wave terahertz technology and related industries in Tianjin.
