Georgia Tech Shenzhen Institute, Tianjin University (GTSI) officially started its fall term on Aug.17. A total of 180 undergraduate and postgraduate students registered on campus as of Sunday.

Because of the epidemic, it was also the first time this year for GTSI to welcome Chinese freshmen who had been admitted to Georgia Tech (GT) in Atlanta, the United States and provide for GT’s senior Chinese students to continue their studies in China.

In order to ensure the safety of students after returning to campus, staff with GTSI has conducted comprehensive preventative measures.

Li Ying, a freshman undergraduate from Beijing who has been admitted to GT with biology as her academic major this year, is now studying at GTSI due to the epidemic.

Although Li could not go to the U.S. at this time, she did not feel frustrated. Instead, she feels happy to study in GTSI.

Li said that Shenzhen leaves a good impression on her and she has quickly adapted herself to the new environment.

Li’s plan in the new term is, in addition to her studies, to take part in more social and club activities.

Zhang Tingyu, a postgraduate student in GTSI, said that he originally planned to apply for GT’s master degree program after his bachelor degree program ended in GT.

However, Zhang finally decided to apply for GTSI’s Electronic & Computer Engineering (ECE) master program, which was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2013.

Students in the ECE master program can receive a master degree certificate presented by GT after they successfully finish the program.

Xiao Songshan, a Chinese associate director with the preparatory office of GTSI, said that although the epidemic has made human beings face great challenges, education enables us to see challenges as opportunities and disappointments as hopes.

Xiao also hopes that students can make full use of the time in Shenzhen and GTSI to empower themselves.
