In order to understand the design of the caisson foundation widely used in the construction of offshore engineering and offshore infrastructure, the School of Civil Engineering invited Associate Prof. Zhen-Yu Yin from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to present a special report named " Offshore caisson foundation in sand: from numerical modelling to macro-element design tool" on Tencent meeting.

This report was hosted by Associate Prof. Jie Xu, Department of Civil Engineering. Prof. Li He, Assistant Dean attended the lecture and delivered a welcome speech.

During the lecture, Prof. Zhen-Yu Yin shared that his team adopted the Combined Lagrangian-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method (CL-SPH), taking into account the different parameters that affect the shape and size of the failure envelope. A recently developed critical state model for sand (SIMSAND) was then introduced and combined with the CLSPH method. This work deals with the response of caisson foundations in sand for offshore wind turbines submitted to combined monotonic and cyclic loadings. An analytical formula is introduced to describe the 3D failure surface based on the analysis. Finally, a macro-element for the caisson foundation in sand submitted to monotonic and cyclic loadings is developed within the framework of hypoplasticity using the proposed analytical formula. The audience at the meeting learnt about thedesign and numerical analysis of the caisson foundation.

A total of 136 teachers and students from Tianjin University, Hebei University of Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Tianjin Chengjian University participated this “Cloud Report”. There were 8 teachers, 68 graduate students, 9 international students, 27 undergraduates. The teachers and students responded enthusiastically to this lecture and looked forward to the next "cloud report".

Associate Professor Zhen-Yu Yin obtained a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Zhejiang University. In 2003 and 2006, he obtained the master's degree and doctorate in French geotechnical engineering. From 1997 to 2003, Dr. Yin worked as an engineer at Zhejiang Jiahua Architecture Design Institute. Then, he worked as a research and teaching fellow mainly at Helsinki University of Technology (Finland), University of Strathclyde (UK), University of Massachusetts (Umass-Amherst, USA), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University and Ecole Centrale de Nantes in France, and HK PolyU. Dr. Yin leads research programs funded by NSFC, ANR, EU-PF7, RGC etc. He has served as member of granular materials committee of American Society of Civil Engineers since 2012. He is currently the Editorial Board Member of “Canadian Geotechnical Journal”, “Soils and Foundations”, “Acta Geotechnica”, “J. ZhejiangU-A” and “IGGE”. Since 2008, he has published over 160 SCI articles in peer reviewed international journals (best paper awards: 2014 in Geotechnique Letters, 2017 in Acta Geotechnica), with H-index of WOS of 35.

Dr. Yin is currently an associate professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and head of the Soil Mechanics Laboratory.
