On June 6, 2020, Tianjin University donated a batch of badly needed portable medical equipment to Tanchang County, Gansu Province with a total value of more than 5 million yuan. This batch of portable equipment would be available in 25 township hospitals of Tanchang County to help people to see a doctor at home, thus providing people in remote villages with easier access to getting treatment.

Tanchang County of Gansu Province was a poverty-stricken county assisted by Tianjin University. In recent years, the university has given play to its advantages and stepped up efforts in launching projects to alleviate poverty, such as developing education, helping people acquire knowledge they needed to shake off poverty, purchasing goods and services provided by the poor, supporting the development of local industries, and helping to improve health standards in poor areas. Being poor and returning to poverty because of illness were two biggest obstacles to lifting people out of poverty. Although the shortage of medical resources in Tanchang had been greatly mitigated, there was still a lack of advanced equipment that enabled people to see a doctor at home. Therefore, better public health and medical services were not available for people in remote rural areas.

Knowing about the needs of people in Tanchang County, Tianjin University made a quick response to donate 27 hosts of full digital portable color Doppler ultrasound diagnosis system jointly with Shantou Institute of Ultrasonic Instruments Co., Ltd. (SIUI). In addition, they donated a series of corollary equipment with a total value of over 5 million yuan, including abdominal convex array probes, high frequency linear array probes, workstations, special trolleys, consumables, and so forth. SIUI would be responsible for the installation and debugging of the medical equipment, as well as the training in its operation. It also provided a seven-year warranty for the hardware and free software upgrades for life.

According to a relevant cadre of Tianjin University, “The donation makes each township hospital in Tanchang County get a portable color Doppler ultrasound machine. Township doctors can provide medical services for patients with advanced medical equipment, covering every village in the county, so that patients are able to see a doctor at their home.” He added, “We hope this batch of medical devices can improve the standard of basic medical security in Tanchang and benefit more people, so as to promote poverty elimination and improve health standards in poor areas.”
