On April 23, the 25th World Book and Copyright Day, Tianjin University organized a series of online activities to boost reading among its students who are still confined to their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Knowledge-sharing seminars, classic book appreciation classes and online concerts were broadcast live. In addition, students who want to read a newly-released book can fill in their details on the university library’s YUNTAI-BUY app, then have the physical books purchased and mailed to them by the library at a time of their choosing - in accordance with epidemic prevention and control arrangements.

The university also introduced a home-reading booklist recommended by over 20 teachers.

Prof. Zhouheng from the School of Mechanical Engineering, and an academician of CAS, hoped students would be problem-oriented and read classic books that might shed light on their current difficulties.

Associate Prof. Wang He from the School of Architecture recommended the book Exploitation of the Works of Nature (《天工开物》in Chinese), urging students to make good use of time spent indoors, and to refine themselves by reading classic books.

Feng Jicai, head of the Feng Jicai Institute of Literature and Art at Tianjin University, is one of the most influential writers of contemporary Chinese literature. He also recommended two books for students to read; World Within My Study (《书房一世界》in Chinese) and Stories of Worldly Folks (《俗世奇人全本》in Chinese). Feng proposed that these two books would help students to reflect on themselves and explore their inner power and courage to proceed better through life.

It is reported that Tianjin University has celebrated the World Book and Copyright Day for four years in a row, trying to build a scholarly campus where everybody loves reading.
