Dr. Fan Jintao from the School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering won the 16th Wang Daheng Optical Award for College Students, as was announced on March 28, 2020.

Fan Jintao was a doctoral student of Class 2015 at the ultrafast laser laboratory of the School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering.

He joined Tianjin University’s Qiushi College in 2009 to study electronic science and technology. In 2013, Fan was enrolled as a graduate student studying physical electronics and transferred to a doctorate in 2015. He was tutored by Professor Hu Minglie and got his doctor’s degree in engineering in 2019. He was engaged in the research on the nonlinear dynamics of short-pulse optical parametric process and has successfully obtained laser pulse output with few periods. Recently he has successfully applied for the title of Mary Curie and the EU MULTIPLY fund, and become the postdoctoral fellow at Leibniz University in Hanover, Germany. The Mary Curie and MULTIPLY funds are designed to assist the next generation of leaders in optical innovation research with their career development. Fan will continue to work on ultrashort pulse nonlinear optics in the Uwe Morgner research group in near future.

While studying for his doctorate, Fan Jintao published more than ten papers as the first author and corresponding author in the world’s high-level journals such as Optics Letter, Optics Express, Journal of Lightwave Technology, and participated in CLEO (Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics), UFO (Ultrafast Optics) and other well-known international academic conferences multiple times to report his work. He has won the Jiang Zhen Scholarship, Tianjin University Excellent-doctor Fund, EU MULTIPLY Fund, Mary Curie Optics Member and other honorary titles.

Wang Daheng Optics Award was established by the Chinese Academy of Optics and funded by Professor Wang Daheng, the member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. It aims to promote the development of China's optical science and technology, and encourage young and middle-aged workers of science and technology and college students in the field of optics and optical engineering to work hard and innovate. Since its establishment in 1996, the award has been selected for 16 sessions, and picked up 25 young and middle-aged scientific and technological workers and 261 university students as optical award winners. Many award winners have become accomplished scientists and made outstanding contributions. It is reported that in the 16th Wang Daheng Optical Awards in 2019, two young and middle-aged workers of science and technology and thirty college students were selected as optical prize winners.
