TJU Lecture Tells Story about New Medicine Development

 Campus

At 8 p.m., March 15, the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (SPST) invited Professor Gao Qingzhi to give an online lecture on the general process of new drug developing. As one of its enrollment promotion activities, SPST broadcasted the lecture on multiple online media outlets and short video platforms such as Douyin, Bilibili and Kuaishou.

Professor Gao Qingzhi from SPST studied about medicinal chemistry and molecular targeting, synthetic chemistry and organo catalysis, and computer-aided drug design. He has been dedicated to the discovery of functional drug delivery carriers and understanding mechanisms of molecular targeting.

In his report, Professor Gao introduced comprehensively the drug development process.

He pointed out that China is entering a new era of innovative drug research and development. “The COVID-19 epidemic made us realize the major problems China faces in epidemic prevention and control as well as patient treatment. We are facing the lack of clinical drugs that are useful for suppressing viruses, the lack of independent intellectual property rights for vaccines, and the lack of reserves for innovative drugs.” Prof. Gao said.

In terms of targeted drugs, Gao took pains to explain what targeted drugs are, how to design and screen them with the help of computers, and what are the benefits of computer-aided drug designs. Gao maintained that computer-aided drug design was favored for its accuracy, speed and efficiency and that the research and development of innovative drugs was actually technology-driven, and combined with the latest research results to explain examples.

At the end of his report, Professor Gao shared his work and life doctrine of "doing something useful to mankind" and encouraged students to exert themselves in their study like a sponge in the ocean absorbing water and constantly improve themselves and contribute to the country.

Then, Prof. Gao and his colleagues answered online questions posed by students and parents in the live broadcast room of Tencent Classroom.

More than 800 people attended the cloud class on multiple platforms.

Zhang Ling, the head of the Hubei Admissions Group and vice president of SPST, presided over the whole report.
