On January 17, 2020, which was December 23 on lunar calendar, is also known as the minor Spring Festival in Northern China. The 2020 Chinese New Year Party at Tianjin University for Faculty and Students was held to accompany the teachers and students who stayed at school during the Spring Festival and offer them best wishes for the new year.

Jin Donghan, president of Tianjin University, and Lei Ming, deputy party secretary of Tianjin University, joined the party to get together with students to celebrate the arrival of the Spring Festival. Besides, over 160 Chinese and international faculty and students from different schools joyfully gathered in celebration of the coming Chinese New Year.

The entire canteen was decorated with lanterns and festoons, which set a jubilant tone for the festival. The activity was divided into two stages: the traditional culture fete and culture dinner. At the fete, the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage and folk artists were invited to perform traditional folk arts, such as the sugar-figure blowing, sugar painting, dough figurine, Yangliuqing Chinese Wood-Block New Year pictures printing, Chinese knot weaving, gourd making, Spring Festival couplets writing, among others. Both Chinese and international teachers and students enjoyed various folk activities to experience the profound traditional Chinese culture. In the couplets-writing experience area, foreign students wrote the Chinese character “Fu” (meaning blessing and happiness) with a brush and took photos with their mobile phones to capture the wonderful memories of the New Year celebration. In the dumplings-making experience area, teachers and students made a lot of dumplings together that was a symbol of happiness and good health, thus further creating a strong festival atmosphere.

The culture dinner was served as a buffet dinner and a creative menu with Chinese characteristics was introduced. The dishes like Joyful Gathering, Dragon Hidden in Peiyang, and Gathering of Talents enabled students staying at school to taste traditional Chinese foods and learn more about Chinese culture. Many students gave wonderful performances: minority students’ exuberant dance mix, Chinese students’ original cross talk, as well as foreign students’ expressive cross talk and clapper talk, romantic singing, and vivid shadow puppetry belonging to the intangible cultural heritage continuously won applause from the audience. The lucky draw during the performance consistently surprised the audience, creating one climax after another, and exquisite and practical prizes highlighted humanistic care of Tianjin University.

Moreover, Jin Donghan and Lei Ming sent red envelopes and selected books to each Chinese and international student.

Aside from the Chinese New Year party for faculty and students, Tianjin University also took New Year’s pictures for students to record wonderful moments of the Spring Festival. They organized them to write letters to their families with customized writing papers so as to send their personal messages and New Year’s greetings to their families far away. The University also recorded a New Year’s greeting video for students to express their best wishes to the university, as well as their teachers and parents.

It is reported that the Chinese New Year Party of Tianjin University for Faculty and Students has been held for more than 20 years. Tianjin University also prepared gift packages containing nuts, fruits and drinks for students staying at school during the Spring Festival, inviting them to eat dumplings and watch the Spring Festival Gala together so that every student who couldn’t go back home for their family reunions could get together to spend the Spring Festival at their second home, at Tianjin University.
