On December 5, the International Council on Combustion Engines (CIMAC) Circle 2019 was held at Marintec, Shanghai, which attracted a total of nearly 100 representatives from home and abroad to participate in the meeting. It was chaired by Paolo Tonon, CIMAC Vice President Communications, and Senior Vice President at ABB Turbo Systems.

CIMAC President and Professor at Tianjin University, Jin Donghan graced the event by delivering a speech to the attendees. He pointed out that “CIMAC is a dynamic and attractive organization, which brings together the leading expertise from engine manufacturers, components and system suppliers, classification societies, and universities around the world. For engineers and researchers, the CIMAC Circle provides a great opportunity to interact with experts from the industry, to find solutions together to popular topics, as well as broaden the understanding to related subjects discussed in the program.”

Jin Donghan stressed that the topic of this Circle was to focus on the "Global 0.5% Sulphur Cap 2020". The decision to stick with the 2020 implementation of the global sulphur cap of 0.5% for fuel oil used in ships was confirmed at IMO’s MEPC 70th session. The cap is significantly lower than the current level and may cause a severe financial impact across the maritime industry, which will require a number of measures to combat the rise. He also expressed his hope that the experts and representatives wouldconduct sufficient exchanges and discussions, and put forward more constructive suggestions and measures to address the "shipping" sulphur limit.

As panelists at the Circle, the key industry experts also shared research results and views, and conducted in-depth discussions with the participants from MAN Energy Solutions, Fuels Technologist, CMA CGM, Shandong Shipping (Hong Kong) Holdings Ltd, and China Classification Society (CCS) Wuhan Rules & Research Institutes.
