Two Experts in Seismic Engineering Present Academic Lectures

 Campus

On Oct.15th,Dr. Qian Shunzhi from Nanyang Technological University and Prof. Rajesh Dhakal from University of Canterbury were invited by the School of Civil Engineering to give lectures on eco-friendly engineered cementitiousand performance-based seismic design methods.

Dr. Qian Shunzhi talked about eco-friendly engineered cementitious composites with rice husk ash. During the report, he introduced the research and development of a new eco- friendly high-toughness engineering cement-based material based on rice hull ash.

“Beyond Life-Safety: The Quest Continues” was the topic of the report Prof. Rajesh Dhakal shared with postgraduate and doctoral students and teachers in related research directions. Prof. Rajesh Dhakal introduced the current seismic design methods, and took residential and commercial buildings as examples to illustrate the performance of buildings designed according to these principles in the earthquake. He also introduced the seismic performance of non-structural components and its significance of research, and explained that the performance-based seismic design of building structures was an important and urgent demand of the country and society, which is the international front edge and hotspot. Then, Prof. Rajesh Dhakal took the non-structural components and connections as an example to introduce the ongoing research: simplified seismic loss estimation methods, seismically resilient non-structural elements, and development of low loss building system.
