“It is time for us to rethink whether the university’s rules and regulations, work designs, teaching principles and our school-running ideas have all centered on the task of talent cultivation? In the new era, what kind of people are we trying to cultivate? Will the current talent-cultivation system be able to raise students that can face future challenges?” Tianjin University’s president Jin Donghan pointed out the need to reform the university’s talent-cultivation system in his report delivered to nearly one thousand audiences of teachers and students at a conference convened on November 29th, 2019 on Tianjin University’s Peiyangyuan Campus.

Party Secretary Li Jiajun presides over the conference.

The conference released Tianjin University’s new plan for talent cultivation that advocates the concepts of “Five Excellences” and “Three involvements”. By “Five Excellences”, the university intends to reinforce the moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labour education and has put forward a supporting package of subplans. For example, there will be personal-tailored working-out arrangements for undergraduate students and help them develop a lifelong exercise habit. A College of Arts and Humanities is to be established to train talents who will possess good aesthectic ability as well as a creative mind for scientific researches.

“We should deal with the relationship between general education and professional education, knowledge learning and ability training, and emphasize more on value shaping and refining.” President Jin Donghan said in his report.

Vice Party Secretary Lei Ming interprets the newly released talent cultivation plan in detail.

To support the implementation of the “Five Excellences”, Tianjin University comes up with the “Three Involvements” plan that fortifies the foundation to realize the talent cultivation plan. “All the teachers and staff should get involved and play his or hers role in student training; the whole period of students’ college life should be concerned and directed; and the education environment should extend from physical environment to virtual environment like cyberspace.” said Lei Ming, the university’s vice party secretary noted in her report at the conference.

Li Jiajun, the Party Secretary of Tianjin University noted that the reform in the talent cultivation plan would further avail the unviersity’s goal to shape its students into qualified persons who uphold a national identity, global perspective, innovative spirit and practical abilities.
