On October 13, 2019, the final of the 5th China College Students’ ‘Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Tianjin University grabbed the gold medal during the main track with Smartmens – China’s Leading Guardian of Major Equipment project, while simultaneously taking the silver medal at the international track with BASIC: Make Bioenergy Smarter project.

The project “Smartmens – China’s Leading Guardian of Major Equipment” was from a technology company in Tianjin, co-founded by Professor Duan Fajie as well as his students Ye Dechao and Li Yangzong from the School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering of Tianjin University. The premise of this project centered on the non-contact and low-intervention online monitoring of a blade, which could ensure the safety of China’s major rotating equipment. Having achieved their goal, it is now widely applied to aero-engines, steam turbines, shield machines and other major rotating equipment, thus proving to be a great contribution to the development of China’s advanced manufacturing.

BASIC: Make Bioenergy Smarter project, was jointly researched and developed by Gu Tianbao, a graduate from the School of Environmental Science and Technology, Tianjin University, and holder of a doctorate from Aalborg University in Denmark, as well as Han Zixi, a doctor also from the School of Environmental Science and Technology. They independently developed the software BASIC. The project was designed to deal with the incineration and gasification of biomass as well as solve problems such as the disposal of agricultural and forestry straw in China. The software BASIC was a unique targeted simulation software for the incineration and gasification of biomass and was known as the “foundation of the industrialization of the biomass gasification”.
