Second MEM Forum: Experts and Scholars Offer Suggestions for "Smart City"

On May 25th, the Second MEM (Master of Engineering Management)Forum was successfully held on Weijin Road Campus of Tianjin University (TJU). The theme of the Forum was "Build a Smart City, Create a Bright Future". Sponsored by the TJU MEM project,the Forum reviewed the development process of the TJU MEM project, and discussed the future development direction of the industry based on the concept and ideas of Smart City.

Professor Bao-feng Huo, Dean of CoME (College of Management and Economics)and Professor Nan Feng, Vice Dean of CoME, Xue-qing Wang,Professor of CoME and Vice Director of Guidance Commission on Engineering Cost Education under Ministry of Education of P.R.C, Tie-jun Cui, Distinguished Professor of College of Geography and Environmental Science, Tianjin Normal University, Zi-jian Bai, Director of Traffic Planning Research Center of Tianjin Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute, Tao Wan, Traffic Model Expert of Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute,Hai-na Wang, General Manager of Tianjin Guangzheng Construction Project Consulting co., LTD., and other senior experts and scholars in related industries attended the Forum. More than 200 people including MEM teachers and students, alumni and industry peers were present to exchange ideas. The Forum was hosted by Professor Hui Sun, Director of the MEM project.

Professor Nan Feng, Vice Dean of CoME,gave a welcome speech. He pointed out that Smart City development is a highly interdisciplinary subject, not only involving Engineering Management, but also Transportation, Environmental Information and other fields. The forum is not only about the development of technology, but also about the transformation of development ideas.

Professor Xue-qing Wang, Vice Director of Guidance Commission on Engineering Cost Education under Ministry of Education of P.R.C made a detailed introduction to the development of MEM major in China such as the current situation and development direction of MEM major and the advantages and features of the MEM program in TJU, like its training mode, teaching staff, curriculum arrangement and alumni resources.

Professor Hui Sun talked about what an ideal Smart City looked like based on her own experience, and encouraged the students to study hard and contribute to the construction of Smart City.

Professor Bao-feng Huo pointed out that the industry would enter the era of big data and artificial intelligence in the future and would face many challenges. There is an obligation to integrate school resources, government resources and industry resources to provide impetus for reform and innovation and contribute to social development.

Professor Tie-jun Cui from Tianjin Normal University College of Geography and Environmental Science, discussed how the development of information helps provide services for decision-making. Zi-jian Bai Director of Traffic Planning Research Center of Tianjin Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute shared his research about how to carry out road engineering in a more intelligent, qualified and scientific way. Tao Wan, a traffic model expert from Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute explained how to collect urban big data information, match urban traffic models and refine the model to provide a basis for urban scientific planning. Hao Chen, from an engineering consultant company, talked about how their company strives to provide decision makers with asset data collection, asset data collation and asset information models.
