 Global

On May 22, the 4th APEC Workshop on Sustainable Cities was held in Manila, in the Philippines. It was sponsored by the Tianjin University APEC Sustainable Energy Center (APSEC).

The Workshop served as a side meeting of the 57th Meeting of the APEC Energy Working Group (EWG57), and was attended by more than 80 delegates, including the representatives from the APEC Secretariat, the EWG Secretariat, 16 APEC economies, 4 expert groups, 2 task forces, the Asia-Pacific Energy Research Center (APERC), the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), National Energy Administration, Tianjin University, the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute, and the State Grid Corporation Customer Service Center.

During the workshop, APSEC presented the APEC Sustainable Urban Development Report – From Models to Results, elaborated in the framework of APSEC’s pillar program on the Cooperative Network of Sustainable Cities (CNSC). The report underlines the benefits of scaling up sustainable urbanization in APEC cities. This would help not only to reduce air pollution and make cities more amenable, but also to diminish the risks of slum formation and, above all, to make cities more resilient against disaster risks.

Six experts from five economies including the Philippines, Peru, Viet Nam, Malaysia and China shared their ideas on the theme of “Sustainable Urban Planning and Energy Systems”, including Smart Cities and Climate Change, Initiatives and Programs on Sustainable Urban Development in Peru, the Sustainable Energy Development of Da Nang city in Viet Nam, the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda, “Accelerating Urban Sustainability” in Malaysian Cities, Rural Spatial Network and Revitalization Paths in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, Enhancing the Energy Infrastructure Connectivity in the APEC Region, and Promoting Distributed Renewable Energy, Microgrid and Demand Side Management.

The Workshop concluded with a roundtable discussion chaired by APSEC, with participation by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), National Grid Customer Service Center, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) of China, the Tianjin Innovative Finance Investment Company and the APEC CNSC Program Joint Operations Center.

They shared and discussed the topic of cities innovative energy technologies, the application of a smart energy micro-grid, their experience of urban low-carbon development and sustainable city indicator systems.

Tianjin University strives to make APSEC a brand project and a world-class energy research center. As the official body of the APEC Cooperation Initiative for Jointly Establishing an Asia-Pacific Urbanization Partnership proposed on the Beijing Yanqi Lake APEC Leaders Meeting, APSEC has been actively promoting the implementation of the project for a cooperative network of sustainable cities in APEC economies.
