Such activities provide opportunities for students to appreciate the rich dress culture of ancient China.

Peiyang Handicraft Art Association was established for the purpose of maintaining intangible culture, respecting traditional culture as well as incorporating new culture, and to this end it has conducted diverse handicraft activities, including the paper-cutting activity, the paper-folding activity, the Chinese knot weaving activity as well as the bead-string activity. Such activities combined traditional and innovative culture; the artistic sector and the academic sector melded with each other. As well as these, an extracurricular Chinese knot weaving class with Chinese characteristics was offered by the Handicraft Art Association, which many foreign students attended. With both “Art Study without End”, the paper art exhibition, and “Crafts at your Fingertips”, the handcraft exhibition showed that ingenious students decorate their college life with exquisite handcrafts. The “Sea of Paper-cutting Class” is a paper-cutting activity which aims to provide professional paper-cutting teaching and paper-cutting activities. Such activities demonstrate Chinese traditional culture and make a great contribution to the protection of national intangible cultural heritage. In order to give students a quick start in the paper-folding activity, Peiyang Paper-folding Association taught students different techniques to fold paper and meanwhile improve their imagination and operational ability.

Science and technology associations, such as the Peiking Starlight Astronomical Society, have greatly enriched students’ after-school life. They have held several activities including National Astronomical Observatory Study Tours in Xinlong, a Field Astronomical Observation, a Roadside Astronomical Science Popularization Exhibition, and the Collective Observation of Geminid Meteors. “Originality in the Astronomical Filed, Touch the Heart”, the innovation in design competition held by the Student Association of Science and Technology during the Science Festival, the “Songzheng Cup” Robot Competition, the “Weichai Day” Science Popularization Exhibition, the “Crabapple Festival and Science popularization Day”, and the “Challenge Cup” extracurricular academic science and technology competition held among national university students, all provided students opportunities to engage with an academic science and technology atmosphere.

The TJU Debate team has already headed out of campus and into the world. Many debate competitions, such as the CDA National Debate Finals, International Chinese Debate Tournament, and Chinese Internet debate, Baihe Cup National Debate Challenger Tour Finals, the International Chinese Debate of National Championships Finals, and the Championship Cup of the National Debate Contest have witnessed the development of the TJU team. Since September 2015, with the purpose of promoting student development, TJU has begun to set up a second class for students and put extracurricular practice education into curricula as well as introduce a reform in the credit system. At present, there are 184 extracurricular practice education courses opened by different associations, among which 15 practice courses have been opened by interest-oriented associations, with the contents covering ideology and politics, humanity and art, innovation and entrepreneurship, voluntary service, social practice as well as physical and psychological health. The extracurricular practice courses are credits available, and the credits were calculated in student synthetic quality evaluation. Besides, other associations like the Peiyang Match-making Association, the Peiyang Paper-folding Association, the Martial Arts Association, the Eloquence and Speech Association, the Peiyang Harmonicon Association as well as the Peiyang Coffee Club also successfully set up practice courses with diverse content. The course “Culture and Tasting of Specialty Coffee” provides students with the opportunity to drink coffee while obtaining credit. The first coffee lesson was opened in the Rixin Room in Zheng Dong Library of TJU. The aroma of coffee and the academic environment created a cozy atmosphere for students to learn about coffee. By offering actual operation, the coffee class cultivated students’ aesthetic capacity and also added a sense of cultural atmosphere for TJU.

The Introduction of Chinese knotting, the paper-cutting class, the paper-folding class, the Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy class, all enhanced students’ operational ability and improved their artistic cultural awareness. Riding class, primary taekwondo class, the martial arts culture experience class as well as the traditional archery class, all let students understand theoretical knowledge and meanwhile practice their skills. Debate and eloquence, practical etiquette, the theory and practice of a lesson in love as well as German language class all have been popular among students. Under the influence of traditional concepts, especially due to the lack of gender education regarding affection, the lesson in love is needed to improve students’ self-cognition ability and interpersonal communication skills, thus helping students master dealing with the relations between the sexes as well as teaching them some methods to handle emotional crises. More than 800 students have chosen the lesson in love since it was first available in TJU and shortly after that, it was featured on TJTV, PhoenixTV, ShangdongTV as well as www.thepaper.cn. Meanwhile, it was also reported by several other media outlets including people.com.cn, Xinhua.com.cn, Tencent, Enorth, SohuNews, Sino education, ynet.com,Singnet, World Wide Web as well as www.cssn.cn

The extracurricular practice courses offered by TJU have greatly promoted the development of interest-oriented associations and provided a platform for students to show their talents and improve their skills.

The varied association activities were professionally held in TJU, which has enriched students’ cultural life and improved their skills whilst promoting the development of TJU.
