Since 2008, with the support of the third phase of “211”Innovative Talent Training Project Fund and Jiankun International Student Exchange Fund of Tianjin University, the university strives to develop the internationalization of postgraduate education.

1. Promoting international academic exchange

The university encourages and finances doctoral students to attend international seminars and competitions so as to improve their academic levels and international exchange abilities.

In 2009, the university financed seven postgraduates students from School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, School of Chemical Engineering, School of Civil Engineering and School of Environmental Science and Engineering to participate abroad in high level international conferences. They published more than ten high level conference papers (retrieved on SCI and EI) and presented their papers in the conferences.

In 2010, the university financed more than 30 postgraduate students to attend Solar Decathlon. It was the first time in history that postgraduates of TJU had participated in professional competitions abroad in a large group. It broadened graduates’ horizon and developed their skills of innovation and practice. Interdisciplinary study was promoted between the fields of architecture, chemical engineering, civil engineering as well as electrical engineering and automation, while teaching, scientific research and hands-on practice were integrated. In the same year, TJU financed 21 doctoral students to participate in the high level international conferences, more than half of whom presented their papers in the conferences.

In 2011, to ensure an effective operation of Jiankun International Student Exchange Fund of Tianjin University, the Graduate School took the responsibility for the review and selection of postgraduate candidates to be financed to participate in high level international conferences. The School formulated financing measures of Jiankun Fund and defined financing conditions, scope and procedures. As an important reference of the funding standard, schools established, according to the importance of the international conferences, a hierarchical directory and formed complete management procedures, from financial aid application to summary report. In that year, Jiankun Fund endorsed four batches of funding, financing 22 postgraduate students from 9 schools to attend international academic conferences in US, UK, Japan, Singapore and other countries, providing financial support of 245.3 thousand RMB.

In 2012, 62 doctoral students were financed to attend international academic conferences in US, Germany, UK, and Portugal where they made academic reports.

The university drew up a plan for the establishment of postgraduate English taught curriculum, which elaborated the construction goal, the contents and the expected outcome in the following three years. According to the cultivation strength and internationalization levels of different majors, the university decided to establish three postgraduate English taught majors in School of Architecture, School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering, and School of Computer Software, providing 30 postgraduate English taught courses, involving 12 schools. The curriculum include postgraduates degree courses, compulsory courses and optional courses. All of these laid the foundation for promoting the internationalization of graduate cultivation.

3. Postgraduate joint training

In 2007, a China Scholarship Council program for post-graduates was official launched aiming to develop High Level Universities. 96 doctoral students were financed to study abroad in top-notch universities in the world, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto, London Institute, the University of Edinburgh, Osaka University, and Berlin Technical University.

By the end of 2011, the university has sent more than 400 students to top universities abroad to study for a doctoral degree or for joint training.

Before 2008, the joint training of postgraduates was realized via international exchange programs of supervisors. Joint training based on the cooperation of supervisors with foreign universities was established in School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering, School of Electronic Information Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, School of Architecture, School of Chemical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, and School of Environmental Science and Engineering There were about 30 postgraduates from over ten majors attending the program every year.
