Graduate Curriculum

Tianjin University implements the education policy set by the Chinese Communist Party, adheres to the principle of developing the country via better education, embraces the campus culture of rigorous study, upholds the tradition of patriotic dedication and defines cultivation of ethics as the basic task of postgraduate education. Now, there are about 14,000 registered full-time postgraduate students, including about 3,000 doctoral students, around 10,000 master students as well as 5,000 part-time graduate students.

Tianjin University has long attached utmost importance to postgraduate education, starting from Peiyang time. Tianjin university took the lead in the introduction of education model adopted by European and American key universities. The first batch of Peiyang graduates was qualified to go directly to the graduate schools of Harvard University, Yale University and other famous universities for further study. In 1934, the Engineering Research Institute, National Peiyang Engineering College was established and issued the earliest postgraduate admissions and degree granting regulations. After the postgraduate students recruitment returned to normal in 1979, Tianjin University in 1984 became one of the first 22 universities to establish graduate schools. In 1997, Tianjin University became one of the first national key universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education to recruit part-time students for the Master of Engineering After that, Tianjin University, also among the first, started to recruit students for degrees of Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Master of Landscape Architecture. Meanwhile it also became the first to provide part-time Master program for teachers from vocational schools and colleges.

With a consideration of the different educational objectives for students of academic degrees and for those of professional degrees, Tianjin University put forward two separate cultivation mechanisms to build a well-balanced educational system with academic degrees and professional degrees. For students of academic degrees, research and taught programs are integrated, emphasizing developing the abilities of acquiring up-to-date knowledge, innovation in academic studies, and international competitiveness, providing continuous academic projects that involves postgraduate and doctoral study, strengthening the pioneering and interdisciplinary quality of the learning content, promoting the integration of knowledge learning and scientific research. For students of professional degrees, production and academic learning are integrated, emphasizing developing the knowledge transfer abilities, practical innovation and professional competence, to build a professional degree program system highlighting practice and application, and therefore promote the reform of teaching mode and improve the teaching quality.

To ensure that only eligible candidates will be granted a degree, Tianjin University is strict in the following three aspects. First, as for course study, the credit system.is adopted. Regulations are specified concerning academic credits, course nature and the number of the courses, which demand that graduate students must finish at least 32 credits of post-graduate courses with at least 23 credits of degree courses, 8 credits of compulsory specialized courses and core courses (at least 2 courses). Second, as for academic dissertation, it must be completed independently by the student with original ideas in accordance with the requirements of the general research papers. Third, as for degree granting evaluation, supervisors will first give a comprehensive evaluation and then the dissertation, with the identity of the author concealed, will be evaluated by the appointed reviewers. Oral defense will be overseen by the department, and approved by the academic degree evaluation sub-committee. Before the evaluation of the degree granting, materials of degree application, review and defense shall be examined and approval by the subcommittee secretary and then forwarded two weeks in advance to the committee members for review. Members of the degree evaluation subcommittee are mainly responsible for the review of the dissertation and the oral defense and after vote, propose and decide whether the degree should be granted. Meanwhile, Tianjin University endeavors in publishing Journal of Graduate Student to provide a platform for the students to exchange ideas on their thesis. Considering the academic level of papers, contribution and economic contribution, authors of excellent paper shall be rewarded and may be recommended to further their study for doctor degree without examination. The measures adopted ensure the high quality of the graduate papers, which has played a positive role in improving the quality of graduate students.

The academic system of the full-time professional degree is the same as the academic master.

Doctoral educational system: time limit for PhD students is 3 - 4 years, and for students of master-doctor continuous program or students with Bachelor degrees admitted to PhD program, 5 years.

1. Doctoral Degrees

The current doctoral curriculum was revised in 2013. A variety of English courses are added to meet the needs of students of different language levels and with different study plans. "Attending international academic conferences" and “English communication and application” are defined as compulsory; considering the features of engineering disciplines, the curriculum allows more independent choices in mathematics courses. The new plan also increased the proportion of elective credits and interdisciplinary courses to promote the interdisciplinary study with importance attached to the fundamental, the advanced and the personalized education. To strengthen doctoral academic ethics and moral education, the new scheme makes  "lectures on academic ethics" a compulsory part

To ensure the quality of education, a separate curriculum was, for the first time, drafted for students with Bachelor degrees selected for PhD program. All course syllabus are revised as required. English versions of curriculum and syllabus are at the same time drafted.

2. Master degree

The current master curriculum was revised in 2010. To comply with the core idea proposed in the 3rd postgraduate education conference, a new round of revision started in 2014, which focuses on building a specialized education system for the coordinated development of academic degree and professional degrees.

For postgraduate students of academic degrees, the three “I”s education system is established to realize quality education of academic excellence, through innovation, internationalization and interdisciplinary. In the design of the curriculum, master and doctoral studies have been effectively connected, and the pioneering and interdisciplinary features of the teaching materials are strengthened.

For postgraduate students of professional degrees, the four "C"s education system is established to realize education of specialized features. The four Cs are by Classification instruction, Capability orientation, Collaboration cultivation and Connotation guidance. In the design of the curriculum, modules are applied; hands-on practice and taught courses integrating up-to-date information of the field are encouraged to develop.
