Founded as Peiyang University in 1895, Tianjin University (TJU) is one of the earliest Chinese universities that started graduate education, as well as the alma mater of the first batch of overseas students supported by the Chinese government. In 1934, during the Peiyang University period, TJU begun to accept graduate students. In 1984, TJU became one of the first twenty two institutes elected by the State Council to run graduate schools. Over the past thirty years, more than 60,000 high-level talents have been educated here. They have made indelible contributions to the establishment of China's modern industrial system and the development of modern economic society.
Graduate education at TJU takes the “service our requirements, improve our quality” as its main goals and focuses on strengthening discipline construction. After years of unremitting efforts, TJU has gradually formed a graduate education system that has more standardized structure and scale, more distinct features and guaranteed quality. Now, TJU has grown into an important institute for fostering graduate students in China.
Currently, TJU has twenty seven doctoral degree programs with first-level disciplines, thirty five master degree programs with first-level disciplines, seventeen professional master degree programs and engineering doctoral degree programs. The university has established a high-quality postgraduate supervisor team with a standardised structure and energy. The tutors, with an average age of forty six, possess noble virtue and significant academic achievements. Fifteen percent of them are leading academics, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of engineering, as well as the “One Thousand Talents Plan” and the "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" distinguished professors. The school has a current enrollment of over 20,000 graduate students, including more than 3,000 doctoral students.
To pursue the goal of developing a world-class university and assisting national strategy, TJU has actively yet steadily implemented a variety of measures, promoting the comprehensive reform of postgraduate education and striving to nurture more top-level talents with strong abilities in both innovation and practice for the nation’s benefit.

In order to optimize the degree management procedures and improve work efficiency, Tianjin university develops a system to achieve comprehensive automation of degree granting management. From 2011, procedures can be carried out online, including the application and granting of degrees, evaluation of excellent doctor fund granting and review of outstanding dissertation. In 2011, Tianjin University set up the academic dissertation supervision system and invited professors, rigorous and accomplished in academic research, to be committee members of the master’s thesis supervision group to supervise and ensure the quality of the master’s thesis papers and oral defense and to verify the confidentiality of the papers. Meanwhile, the university continues with spot check of thesis papers and implements anonymous evaluation.

Tianjin university took the lead in the introduction of education model adopted by European and American key universities. The first batch of Peiyang graduates was qualified to go directly to the graduate schools of Harvard University, Yale University and other famous universities for further study. In 1934, the Engineering Research Institute, National Peiyang Engineering College was established and issued the earliest postgraduate admissions and degree granting regulations. After the postgraduate students recruitment returned to normal in 1979, Tianjin University in 1984 became one of the first 22 universities to establish graduate schools.
